Qualcomm (QCOM), China Unicom (CHU), and the two parties' joint venture Unicom-BREW Telecommunication Technologies Ltd say that 3.4 million China Unicom wireless subscribers have securely downloaded more than 43 million BREW applications since China Unicom's launch of BREW services in July 2003.
Over the past year, there have been 18 million new downloads since China Unicom announced its 25 million download achievement in September 2005, representing a 70% increase. The operator reached its first milestone in June 2004 with 1.5 million BREW application downloads.
According to reserach firm Sino-MR, there are now more than 130 BREW handset models and more than 1,100 BREW applications available to China Unicom subscribers. The number of BREW developers has more than doubled from 300 in 2005 to more than 600 in 2006. Operators, publishers, developers and device manufacturers in China continue to realize growing revenues for wireless applications and services based on the BREW solution.
In honor of this important milestone, China Unicom and Qualcomm organized the "Bravo for BREW 2006" event this week, which brings together more than 200 representatives of the Chinese BREW community, such as handset manufacturers, publishers, developers, operators and wireless subscribers, including Zhengmao Li, vice president of China Unicom and Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, CEO of Qualcomm.
BREW handset manufacturers were honored for various achievements in handset design that further enable the development of high-quality and advanced mobile devices. LG was honored with the "Best Design Award," Samsung with the "Most Models Award," Huawei with the "Fastest Growing Award" and ZTE with the "Most Potential Award."
