According to the report in Taiwan's Economic Daily News, cross-strait telecommunication operators are preparing to jointly reduce the roaming fees between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan at a rate of about 50%.
At present, a call from the Chinese mainland to Taiwan costs about NTD16, which is about CNY4 per minute. In the future, the costs may be reduced to NTD6 per minute plus NTD5 to NTD10 service fee for each call. The Taiwan-based telecom operator Chunghwa Telecom is reportedly discussing with Chinese mainland's leading operator China Mobile about the price reduction.
In the first quarter of 2008, China Mobile president Wang Jianzhou invited 26 telecom operators around the world to participate in a roaming fee reduction program during the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Wang said that the international roaming fees for mobile phone are usually unreasonably expensive and the operators should work together to break this situation.
