China Telecom Shanghai branch has launched a plan to improve its Internet bandwidth to 100 megabytes for its three million broadband users.
According to the plan, this will increase the Internet speed of its family users by tens of times by 2012. About 750,000 newly-built communities and business buildings will realize the bandwidth of "100 megabytes per user and 1,000 megabytes per building" before the end of 2009. The number will be further increased to 1.5 million by the end of 2010 and over three million by the end of 2011. China Telecom Shanghai will reportedly invest CNY6 billion in this project in the next two years.
At present, China Telecom has about 3.6 million broadband users in Shanghai, which means about 80% of them will be able to use the 100 megabytes broadband by 2012.
Meanwhile, China Telecom Shanghai is actively promoting fiber to the home with the PON technology.
