According to reports in foreign media, the University of Tokyo and Taiwan's TSMC recently announced to implement joint research in the advanced semiconductor sector.
The two parties will use TSMC's advanced process to make jointly designed chip and jointly research semiconductor technology to support future computing.
The University of Tokyo said that the two parties will establish an advanced semiconductor technology alliance. To realize this goal, the university set up a "system design lab" at the beginning of October 2019. The lab will use TSMC's open innovation platform "virtual design environment" to design chips; meanwhile, TSMC will provide wafer sharing service to the lab.
President of the University of Tokyo said that they hope the Japanese industry can use this alliance to connect with the world-leading semiconductor manufacturer and help Japan achieve "social 5.0" strategy as soon as possible.
Liu Deyin, chairman of TSMC, said that they are glad to become a cooperation partner of the University of Tokyo. They believe the alliance will turn many innovative ideas into products and build a richer society.
