Li Yue, president of China Mobile, said that by the end of October 2011, China Mobile has signed wireless city construction agreements with over 160 cities in 26 provinces in China, of which nearly 150 cities in 22 provinces had completed construction of basic wireless city platforms.
At the same time, the company has developed nearly 10,000 wireless city applications, serving over six million users. It expects to develop ten million users for the new services. Li made the remarks at the Mobile Asia Congress 2011 held by GSMA.
The wireless city platform refers to a platform established for the entire city, which enables access to a multi-level wireless network anytime and anywhere. Li said while promoting the wireless city construction, China Mobile plans to apply the most advanced mobile Internet technology applications into the urban management and citizens' lives. With this platform, people can gain information about various applications provided in the city, covering government, utilities, traffic, medical, education, employment, finance, travel, lifestyle services, and shopping, with their mobile phones.
Li said it is necessary and important to provide users with a convenient client in the process of wireless city construction. In addition, its software application store will support the development of wireless city. So far, the store has about 800,000 applications and monthly download volume of 100 million times.
China Mobile reportedly started the wireless city project by deploying a 3G network in Xiamen in 2008.
