According to reports in foreign media, MediaTek plans to expand its Indian research and development team to over 800 people.
This Taiwanese chip manufacturer mainly makes products for mobile phones and set-top boxes. The company currently has about 650 research and development employees in India's Noida, Bangalore and Bombay.
Anku Jain, executive director of MediaTek India, said that India is an important market and there are rich talent resources. The company has about 650 R&D staff in India and they hope to continue to expand the team. In the future, they expect to have over 800 R&D employees; however, no specific timeline was available.
Jain explained that the Indian team is responsible for R&D of both global products and Indian products. Their product lines focus on 5G and artificial intelligence development, so does the Indian team. For example, some hardware designs of the company's flagship product P90 were completed in India.
Smartphones that carry P90 are expected to be available in the Indian market in the second half of 2019.
