China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television recently released a recommended standard for the mobile multimedia broadcasting industry and will formally implement it on November 1, 2006.

SARFT says it will be responsible for distributing this standard, which is based on the STiMi (Satellite Terrestrial Interactive Multiservice Infrastructure) technology, and will promote it among various mobile and portable terminal companies providing broadcasting programs and information services.

China's mobile TV standard brings a golden opportunity for China as there is not yet a unified mobile TV standard on the global market. After China failed to gain global recognition for its WAPI standard, this new mobile broadcasting standard might help vault China to the forefront in this particular sector.

Mobile phone television also provides an important opportunity for the telephone network, cable television network and computer network to integrate, and the standardization will directly affect China's process in the merger of the three networks.
