Local media reports that China's Ministry of Information Industry is considering cooperating with some telecom equipment suppliers and research institutions in forming a 4G standard alliance in order to participate in the International Telecommunication Union 4G standard selection in 2008.
Xi Guohua, vice minister of MII, made the remarks about the 4G Standard Alliance in a recent visit to Guangdong where he also expressed his hope of having Huawei and ZTE join the creation of the next generation standard.
However, there is yet no detailed schedule for the foundation of a 4G alliance.
ITU started 4G related studies in 2000 and until now it has set some candidate frequencies for 4G. ITU plans to further collect 4G standard from the international community in 2008.
